Coat changes may appear to be a straight forward process, but for your horse it’s a strenuous time where your horse’s metabolism is working at full speed to generate new hair.
As the days shift, hormonal signals from the pineal gland trigger the production of a new coat. Although only visible to us at the end of the process, coat changes take around 2-3 months with your horse using energy as they go through the four phases of coat change.
- Growth phase
- Resting phase
- Replacement phase
- Hair loss
During this time, you may notice that your horse is itchy, lacks energy when ridden and shows signs of irritability and restlessness.
The duration of the coat change is influenced by the weather, living conditions and breed. Older horses or recovering horses may struggle more during this time.
To support your horse through coat change season, you can add a supplement to their feed to provide them with the extra nutrients and energy they need.
