Frequently asked questions

Equus Health

How do I know if my horse will eat herbs?

From our experience most horses or ponies will eat and enjoy herbs that have been mixed into their every day feeds. It is a good policy to gradually introduce the herbs into the feed over a period of time to suit the horse, especially fussy eaters. You can if necessary dampen the feed with water or sugar beet to make it more appetising.

There is also our liquid products that most horses and ponies will happily eat with their feed.

Is it OK to mix different products?

Generally speaking there is no problem mixing together our herbal products with your horses feed but if you are worried in any way please call our Advice Line for further information.

How much should I feed?

There should be a guide on the label but the quantity will depend on whether your feeding a pony of horse and their weight.

For dried herbs - give approximately 3-4 weeks to be fully absorbed. For liquid herbs - give for approximately 5-10 days to be fully absorbed.

The amount can be increased or decreased depending on the individual circumstances. For on going maintenance small amounts will be sufficient for your horse to benefit over a long period.

If you feel there is little change with your horse after the correct feeding time please tell us about it and we might be able to recommend an alternative product.

Can my horse become addicted to herbs?

Ponies or horses will not become dependent on the herbs.

Is there a difference between dried herbs and liquid herbs?

It is all a question of how fast you want the herbs to work on your horse - see the New Zealnd Equine Herbals range.

Can an allergic reactive be caused by herbs?

It is very rare but occassionally a horse or pony may have an adverse reaction to a certain herb but this will have no long term effect. If you feel concerned in any way please contact our Advice Line as soon as possible.
