Equus Health promoting the best Naturally

We endeavour to bring you regular updated news items about the latest natural supplements we are looking into, issues related to the equine market and any general new information that will interest you about Equus Health.

Keep the flies away naturally!

It is commonly accepted that when it comes to natural products, the most effective fly repelling ingredient has always been citronella oil. Due to the HSE legislation a couple of years ago, citronella oil in proprietary fly repellent products can no longer be sold - the 'natural market' has struggled to offer an effective alternative. So does it have to be 'go non-natural' or not?

Did you know?

  • Purchasing pure citronella oil and either, (i) adding it to your bought fly repellent yourself or (ii) making up your own home brew is perfectly legal! Citronella oil is widely available in most equestrian outlets. A 10ml size of oil is actually ample, as you only need to add a maximum 1% (of a high quality oil) to your finished product i.e. 5ml to a 500ml bottle. Its very inexpensive, so why not go for a bigger bottle!
  • 'Fly Away' products are HSE approved and contain citronella oil, so are both 'legal' and effective! In their wisdom the HSE considered that 0.5% was a 'negligible amount' and for them it ticked all the boxes to become approved. In reality it is not quantity that counts but quality, as indicated earlier, so naturally this product is still a very good one. 'Fly Away' do their Defleqt spray in 500ml and 1litre sizes as well as roll on and wet wipes. Alongside this they do a very effective 'midge away cream'. This range is widely available in most equestrian outlets.

Something internal.
Garlic fed internally on a regular basis, means that sulphur is excreted through the skin, and flies hate sulphur. If you intend feeding garlic with this aim, make sure you use (pure) powder rather than granules as its far more potent in its effect.

On show days.
'Hilton Coal Tar and Neem' shampoo is an excellent secret weapon for show preparation. Wash your horse the day before with it, leaving it on for 5 mins before rinsing and he or she will look good and smell of something flies hate! Available from most stockists to order if not already on the shelf.

The new Protexin's EQUINE PREMIUM range of high quality probiotic products to promote your horse's inner health are now available at your local stockists. See our 'Approved & Recommended Products' pages for more details.

Equus Health gets greener
- leading the way again.

Tubs and buckets have their uses, but just how many does your yard need? Like us no doubt you end up using them for every conceivable storage container around your home; then what? We all tend to chuck them away! This adds to the ever increasing 'plastic mountain' filling up our landfill sites!

In the beginning, many years ago now, Equus Health led the way into refills/bagged products, trying to reduce the amount of waste packaging associated with our industry. Other equine supplement companies followed over the years. They say copying is the best form of 'flattery' don't they? well, if it means more of us consider using less packaging , all well and good!

Whether we like to admit it or not, our world is taking a 'hammering' and we at Equus Health firmly believe if we all take a little responsibility for our environment and its future, we can help slow down the damage us humans are doing to our planet.

On a personal level many of us try to recycle our household waste, use lower energy around the home, or use reusable shopping bags; it all helps. We are being made aware on almost a daily basis, things which are speeding up the damage process to our precious environment and one of the main areas still is an excess of quite often, unnecessary packaging

So from 2008, Equus Health is going further setting the example, hoping that others will follow within the Equine supplements market as happened with our bags originally.

New for 2008 - Biodegradable bags
As a forward thinking company we wish to take some responsibility for our future environment, by changing to using some recycled materials and more eco friendly biodegradable packaging. We are proud to announce that we have sourced some excellent Bags that for all intense and purposes are very similar to those we already use for our 'own sourced' bagged straight herbs etc. However these new ones are 100% biodegradable and will quickly decompose in our landfill sites, unlike many plastic bags which hang around for decades, thus filling up our waste areas very fast.

Extensive use of recycled paper
In addition to this we are in the process of moving to entirely recycled paper for our promotional product and homeopathy leaflets available to everyone of you who wants them, alongside our trade price lists which are just for our retailers. You will notice how high quality the leaflets are, and just by increasing the size of the print run, very little change to the cost price, so its not even costing us that much more! HQ now uses entirely recycled paper in the office and we all recycle cardboard boxes... until they fall apart!

Do your horse a favour and do the environment no harm at the same time!
To 'flag up' our going greener policy, we are launching 'Favours' a completely natural and eco friendly Horse treat, packaging based on a wedding favours theme which happens to be in a biodegradable bag and tied with biodegradable ribbon, finished off with recycled paper tag! Help us to support the going greener issue by buying him a favour, not just for your horse, but for the environment too. If our treats sell as well as we hope they should (our 'herbal junky testers' love them!) We would like to be able to give something back to an Equine charity. For every bag sold a donation given to support equines in need What do you think? If you read this and feel we should, please email us with your support and a suggestion of a suitable charity, an email only takes a few mins. In Sept 08 we will have had Favours on the market for six months, people should know them by them and be buying them regularly .At this point (if they are selling well enough to be worth it) we would like to consider donating to the charity of you our customers choice!

Other projects in the pipeline
We envisage getting greener and greener! There are other packaging issues we want to tackle in the long term, and will be running pilot schemes in certain areas of 'trial packaging' This packaging for some of our nutraceutical products, currently in 'very expensive and very plastic' containers, will be aimed at being more eco friendly, but it has to meet with your approval too!

Watch out for our packaging trials and let us know what you think; an email only takes a min or two!

Scoops and containers
You are always asking for scoops! why! Surely a spoon will do?

We have plastic buckets/pots and scoops all over the place on our yards, most of which is excess packaging and some has very little reuse value. So much of it is binned without being used more than once!

What do you think to offering tubs and scoops to purchase separately to the product, as and when you need it?

Please help us to start considering the environment; email us with your thoughts and suggestions, it only takes a min or two!

Liquid Herbs from New Zealand

New Liquid Herbs

The quality and efficacy of this new range reflects the standard they have come to expect from both human and animal supplements in New Zealand, where this range is the market leader - it's better than you can buy in the human equivalent in the UK! In effect, we have been behind the natural times in this country until now.

This is a very exciting range produced by qualified herbalists James and Vanessa Hart Dip Herb Med MZAMH. Due to their unique manufacturing method, the actions of these liquid herbs are definite and very dose dependant.

Using the range of products over the last year, makes you realise what we have been missing out on!

  Equine Herbals

Click here to see the full range that is available listed on our products page.

Visit the Equine Herbals website to find out more about the quality of liquid herbs.

What are they?

They are a range of liquid supplements that address many everyday equine problems very impressively.

What makes them stand out?

The fact that they are so immediate in their action (in some cases within half an hour) and the more you give, the more the effect as well as their obvious general results.

Why are they different?

As just mentioned, the way they are manufactured offers effectiveness, not yet experienced by similar products already available for the equine enthusiast in this country.

Who says so?

Equus Health continuously trials products of this nature and has officially claimed they have not come across anything of this calibre before.

What is their strength?

Their products carry a strength of 1:2 (1 part herb to 2 parts liquid). The nearest equivalent over here is 1:5 (1 part herb to 5 parts liquid).

What is in the range?

Within the Movement aids are the products 'Devil's Claw Flex', an excellent and reliable alternative to Bute, 'Old friend' which literally takes years off them, 'Staying Power' which supports exactly that and 'E-mmunity' which keeps the immune system in top working order.

The Training aids section consists of calmers and products to aid focus as well as balancing the hormones, a pick me up for the 'down' and help for those who get travel sick symptoms. Products include 'V calm' and 'Equi Calm', 'Listen and Learn', 'Harmony', 'Mellow' and 'Travel'.

Under the title Specific aids there are products for allergic type reactions, (AllergAllay), support for the cushings sufferer (Cushy ife), support for the coughing horse (Koff) and an excellent product for stamping out everyday bugs (Defence).

Products can be added to feed - twice daily is best for ongoing conditions and also fed by syringe where a short term immediate effect is required. These products are not expensive and on going use should cost a top end of approximately £20 a month.

A useful trifold leaflet gives you the basics of the range and in addition to the Equus Health advice line, James Hart offers an excellent email contact for qualified advice on this range, drawing on their long term experience of horsemanship as well as their chosen career path of Herbalism.

What a Good News Letter!

Dear Sirs,

I wanted to write to say how extremely pleased I am with your Winter Glow/Summer Shine product. I am always quick to write complaints and thought I should write some praise too! I have fed your product to my pony daily for around three years and I am always being asked 'why is she so shiny?' It has to be the Winter Glow/Summer Shine. I hardly have to take a brush to her to make her shine and her skin, mane, tail and coat are lovely. Not only that it smells great. I have recommended it to friends and family and infact only last week a friend said she had started giving it to her old pony two months ago and already couldn't believe the difference in him.

I bought my pony from a rescue centre and now she is literally a champion. I ride and drive her and only made it to three shows last year and was overall Driving Show Champion at two of them!

I attach a picture for you to prove the condition.

Thank you for such a wonderful product and please don't stop making it!

Regards
Mrs Louise Mortimer.
East Sussex.
